Oriental rugs are made from a heavy textile, produced for a wide range of purposes ranging from utilitarian to symbolic. Traditionally produced in oriental regions, their main use was for day to day living and home decoration.
Oriental carpets can be pile woven or flat woven without pile, using various materials such as silk, wool, and cotton. Oriental rugs are made from a variety of materials, typically pile or flat woven. They are also created from a range of materials that include silk, wool or cotton.
Their sizes range from a small pillow to large, full-room carpets and will often come with carrier bags and protective covers for ease of transport and protection. Their designs will often include animals, but have been known to be used for Islamic prayer rugs, Jewish Torah ark covers, and Christian altars. Oriental rugs have been part of traditional culture since the Middle Ages and have been integrated into most western modern cultures.
These types of rugs tend to come from what is know as the “Rug Belt,’ which stretches across the MENA region, but also includes Central Asia and parts of India. This is where they get their nickname of “Islamic Carpets” from.
